Pindell: Granny D and her rotating presidential endorsement

If you are confused on whom you should support for president, you aren't the only one.

Doris "Granny D" Haddock is the symbol of the progressive left in New Hampshire. Her well-documented walk across the country for campaign finance reform made her a national name for the issue. Her quixotic campaign for the US Senate was the subject of a recent HBO movie.

So it is no surprise the the 97-year-old grandmother from Dublin, N.H. is a sought after endorsement for Democratic presidential candidates.

Last December she endorsed Mike Gravel. Then she campaigned twice with Dennis Kucinich this year. On Saturday the John Edwards campaign issued a press release announcing that she is endorsing him.

“In my 97 years, I have seen many politicians come and go,” said Granny D in the statement. “Now more than ever, we need a leader who has the courage, the backbone and the integrity to stand up to the corporations and special interests in Washington, to deliver universal health care and energy independence, to fight for the middle class, and to finally bring about public financing of our elections. John Edwards is that man, and I’m proud to support him in this campaign.”

I came across this video on YouTube, I wish that I had seen it on TV. I want your feelings on how the Kucinich's were treated.

Globe Article on Iraq, Democratic Candidate Stance on Iraq

In the article, "Veterans take their war views to the trail" featured today in the Boston Globe, written by Irene Sege a great set of stories are written. I think it does a wonderful job of laying out the campaigns feelings. This article gives people an opportunity to quickly see who believes what they believe. This little clip below, I found very interesting.

"The campaigns of Democrats Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Edwards, Bill Richardson, and Dennis Kucinich all have at least one Iraq veteran lending a hand in New Hampshire. Former senator Mike Gravel, an afterthought in the polls who would immediately withdraw from Iraq, travels with the outspoken antiwar veteran he hired as head of security. On the Republican side, McCain - Vietnam veteran, former prisoner of war, father of two sons in the military - counts more Iraq vets among his New Hampshire volunteers than do his rivals. "His family's not too good to fight this war," says Newbery."

Kucinich Critical of Iowa Democratic Party

Congressman Kucinich, (D-OH), was not invited to Sunday's Democratic Steak Fry in Indianola, nor to a Democratic Presidential Forum Thursday in Davenport.

Kucinich, a Democratic presidential candidate accuses Iowa Democratic Party leaders and other groups of, "rigging the game in Iowa" by excluding him from two Presidential events this week.

According to the Kucinich campaign, Representatives of both events have claimed that Kucinich does not have a sufficiently "active organization" in Iowa.

Traditionally the first in the nation primary and caucus states have been a way for voters to sample the candidates, connect personally with the candidates and put the power into the hands of the people. "When Party leaders and their allies pre-select which candidates they will allow the voters to hear, it's a disservice to the voters. Iowans deserve better than a rigged game," said Kucinich. "The whole purpose of the primary and caucus season is to provide voters with opportunities, not to enable a carnival of interest groups to subvert the process."

Numerous polls show Kucinich running ahead of Senators Joe Biden and Christopher Dodd, who were invited to participate. In the most recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, Kucinich was at 3% nationally, Biden was at 2%, and Dodd was below 1%.

"We're doing better than some of the establishment candidates, and we're moving up," Kucinich said. "Instead of spending millions of dollars on high-priced consultants, and slick advertising, we have a highly motivated grassroots organization."

Weather Is Not Deterring Campaign Supporters...

The weather is dismal, but the attitudes of concerned citizens and political activists are not. Many people have assembled outside the debate arena to show their support for their candidates and voice their concerns on issues from healthcare to immigration.

While we traveled through the crowd, we were able to talk to the different groups that were present:

"I'm supporting Dennis Kucinich because of his department of peace! Kucinich wants to be a healer; he wants the U.S. to lead whole working together with other countries. He has also never gone back on his original vote against the war." - Eileen Lee, New Hampshire

"I agree with John Edwards on the war and his thoughts on Health Care. I think people will be attracted to him because the last election has made him a familiar face." - Pat Hosker, New Hampshire

Just then, a group of Hillary Clinton supporters attempted to cover up a series of Edwards '08 signs with Hillary signs. The Edwards supporters told them to "get lost." I (Justin Martell) then asked the crowd, "I take it you guys don't like that?" "NO!" they yelled back.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a sea of Dodd constituents entered the scene:

"WHO DO WE WANT FOR PRESIDENT? CHRIS DODD!"

It was surprising to see so much support for a lower tier candidate. One of his supporters had this to say:

"He's the best candidate for president. I like his policy ideas for Iraq, the environment, and global warming...he's also very charismatic." - Steve, Connecticut

Lastly, we spoke to a young girl who is working on the Biden campaign:

"Joe Biden has the best plan for Iraq and good experience with foreign policy." - Sarah, Delaware

Some of the other groups that were present were Healthcare, Education, Peace and 9/11 Truth groups. Despite the rain, everyone is very enthused about their causes, and anxious for the debates to begin.
